Chapter 25

On the third day, Tom and Vince went to work on the boat’s motor. They were having chicken for dinner that night. There was a pen of them around back of the main house, so the boat wouldn’t be needed. The scientists were off early after a hearty breakfast. Vince learned that they were paying Tom for three meals a day. Vince was more than happy to add to this and pay for his and Rana’s meals and the Steinlagers if it meant they didn’t have to go back into town. If they could limit their exposure to the outside world, so much the better.

Vince and Tom were halfway through the engine tear down when they took a break for lunch. Neeta had made sausage rolls that morning, and Tom retrieved them from the refrigerator. Rana was busying herself with another book. Neeta was out visiting relatives on the island. Rana had wanted to go with her but then remembered their situation and declined the polite offer.

Vince sipped a can of Coke and picked up the copy of the previous day’s Cook Island Times. There was a headline; Remains washed ashore may be those of one of the missing Korean tourists.

Vince kept reading, betraying no emotion.

The remains of a partially devoured individual were discovered inside the reef at Muri Lagoon by a conch fisherman. They are being sent to a pathologist in Auckland for testing but are believed to be the remains of one of a pair of Korean tourists who failed to catch their flight to Tahiti a day prior. The tour group had no choice but to fly out after alerting police of the missing pair. Incidentally, they were staying at the Rarotongan Resort where a German tourist, not part of the group, died of a heart attack two days ago. The Koreans are not suspected of any foul play, but the authorities in Seoul have been notified. The Korean consulate is dispatching an official from Auckland who is due to arrive tomorrow.

Vince was reading a day-old paper but it made no difference. The two Koreans were the hit team that tried to kill him in the sandwich shop. He motioned Rana over and pointed to the column. Her eyes grew large as she read it several times, then the two of them went for a walk along the beach to talk quietly.

“What’s it mean, Vince?”

“First rule of assassination, get rid of the assassins. Someone else is in the islands. We should prepare for another attempt.”

“We have to get off this island.”

“And go where, Tahiti, Honolulu? If they can reach us in Rarotonga, they can track us anywhere. I think we’re best to lay low and wait it out. Korean tourists are going to stick out even more here on Aitutaki than back on Raro. If there is another team here, we just need to be vigilant.”

Osler climbed out of the trimaran’s cabin and joined Victor on the foredeck. He was surveying the Aitutaki harbor with a pair of binoculars and handed them to his boss to take a look.
